From Homelessness to Hope: Sandra Egner’s Journey to Recovery

Writer: Shannon EganShannon Egan

Sandra Egner’s Recovery Story

Sandra Egner’s journey to recovery began at her lowest point—when she was homeless,

having lost everything, including herself. “I was consumed by pain and hopelessness, to the point where I didn’t want to go on,” Sandra recalls. One night, overwhelmed and exhausted, she fell to her knees and prayed, “I can’t keep doing this to myself! Please take this pain and the craving for one more away—I surrender!” That moment of surrender changed everything.

Desperate for a way out, Sandra began calling treatment centers one by one. When Gateway took her in, it felt like a lifeline she didn’t think she deserved. “That was just over four months ago, and my life has been slowly transforming ever since,” she shares. That decision to reach out for help was the turning point that led to a new path forward.

Finding Strength in Surrender

For Sandra, surrender wasn’t about giving up—it was about finding the strength to accept help. Staying connected to her higher power and her recovery community has been crucial in her journey. “There is life after addiction, and anything is possible with a power greater than yourself and the determination to keep fighting,” she explains. Progress—not perfection—has become her mantra as she continues to rebuild her life one day at a time.

Leaning on a Community of Support

The support of the recovery community has been a lifeline for Sandra, helping her realize that she wasn’t alone. The encouragement from others who understood her struggles gave her the courage to keep moving forward, even on the hardest days. “I remind myself daily that progress—not perfection—is what matters,” she says.

A Message of Hope

To anyone still struggling, Sandra’s message is simple but powerful: “As long as you’re breathing, it’s never too late to find recovery. Surrender isn’t about weakness—it’s the first step toward freedom.” Her journey shows that no matter how dark things get, there is always hope.

Sandra’s story is a powerful reminder that recovery is possible for anyone willing to take that first step. Her strength, faith, and determination are proof that a new life is always within reach.
